Solar Home-Lighting Systems in Katkari Village, Maharashtra
Solar Solutions for Kathkari Village
The inhabitants of Kathkari Village reached out for an alternative lighting solution due to a significant lack of electricity from state-run power companies. Located in Bhadoli, just 5 km off Manor-Palghar Road and 10 km from the Mumbai-Gujarat National Highway, Kathkari has power lines but receives electricity for only 10 hours a day. While the village features a few cement structures, it predominantly consists of 38 bamboo cane grass huts occupied by the local tribal community. After conducting several preliminary visits, we decided to provide all households with solar home-lighting systems. Each system includes:
Three 2.5-watt mobile LED lights Individual chargers, an inverter, and a battery A mobile charging unit A 10-watt solar panel affixed to the roof The first light unit is used in the hut, the second in the kitchen or for studying, and the third for safe navigation outside at night. The total cost of implementing these lighting systems was covered by Heart & Hands-On. Additionally, a fund was established for the replacement of batteries, which need to be changed every 18 months. To ensure proper usage, training sessions were conducted for all residents, demonstrating how to operate the equipment effectively. A year later, the program continues to run smoothly, bringing much-needed light into the lives of the Kathkari community
