In August and September 2010, during a critical rise in malaria cases, the Bombay Municipal Corporation issued stop-work notices to construction sites across Mumbai due to hygiene non-compliance. In response, we took swift action to protect the health of the city’s labor force. At four major construction sites, we set up medical camps where doctors tested all laborers for malaria. Those diagnosed received free, comprehensive care and treatment, which was vital in saving lives and containing the spread of the disease.
In addition to medical care, we implemented preventive measures, including fumigation and eliminating stagnant water to reduce mosquito breeding. This initiative successfully helped control the malaria outbreak at these sites. As part of our ongoing commitment through the ‘Heart and Hands On’ initiative, we plan to expand these efforts annually to safeguard the health and well-being of labor communities across the city.
